Automatic Strapping Machine Install - Strapping Roll Formed Steel Packs in NSW
Project Overview
FROMM Packaging Australia recently completed the installation of a custom designed automatic strapping solution for a leading Australian manufacturer of light gauge roll-formed steel wall framing and ceiling systems for the construction industry.
The customer was seeking to improve equipment reliability and gain access to stronger local technical support for their packaging operations. As systems age they can become more difficult to service and maintain, impacting long term operational confidence. The new FROMM solution maintains strapping speed whilst improving reliability, maintenance efficiency and integration with existing lines, ensuring long term stability and support through FROMM's national service network.
The FROMM Solution
At the heart of the project is the FROMM PM70000 Automatic Strapping Machine, fitted with a FROMM MH550 strapping head, and a FROMM KB4 dispenser for 20 kg strapping coils of PET strap. This robust, industry proven system is tightly strapped and secured during handling and transport.
Given the customer's unique packaging requirements, FROMM designed a custom low-profile frame with the strapping head mounted underneath, to accommodate a compact footprint and reduced working height, allowing the system to integrate seamlessly with the existing line configuration. Despite the compact setup, the equipment maintains the high performance expected from a FROMM engineered solution.
Challenges and Design Considerations
Strapping bundles of roll-formed steel presents distinct challenges due to the limited surface area available for sealing and the heavy duty nature of the material. FROMM's engineering team addressed this by selecting the MH550 strapping head, which provides consistent tensioning and secure strap application even in demanding conditions.
The low working height and small footprint also required precise mechanical design and onsite adjustment to achieve optimal alignment within the customer's production layout.
Installation and Commissioning
The system was preassembled and tested offline before delivery to site. This ensured a smooth transition during installation and allowed the customer's production downtime to be minimised.
The installation took place over two days, including the removal of the existing equipment, positioning and alignment of the new FROMM system, and interlock testing.
The installation phase also included dedicated operator training and live production runs, ensuring staff were confident in system operation and basic troubleshooting before handover.
Project Outcomes
With FROMM's local support and preventative maintenance program already in place for other equipment at the facility, the new strapping system will now benefit from the same monthly service schedule to ensure minimal downtime and consistent performance. Combining Swiss-engineered reliability with local technical expertise, FROMM has delivered a robust, future ready packaging solution that meets the demands of modern steel manufacturing.
