Automatic strapping for Timber Manufacturer facility upgrade

FROMM partnered with a manufacturer of timber dunnage and timber pallets seeking to transition from handheld strapping tools to a fully automated solution as part of a major upgrade in their new production facility
Previously, strapping was applied by handheld battery strapping tools in multiple positions onto timber packs. The timber packs were then docked to length, which limited speed and consistency.
The automatic FROMM strapping system was designed and manufactured to be integrated with an Acora TimberSmart IT system and Packsaw to improve overall cycle efficiency and enhance operator safety.
The FROMM Solution
To meet the customer's production, safety and quality requirements, FROMM supplied a PM151002 automatic strapping machine paired with a FROMM MH600 strapping head for PET strap. Purpose built for this timber application, this fully automated system delivers consistent clamping pressure, accurate strap placement and reliable bearer insertion within a high volume manufacturing environment.

Key System Features
- Automated strapping system for timber packs with integrated hydraulic compression and bearer insertion
- Top scissor press delivering up to 5000 KGF of clamping force
- Side scissor press delivering up to 3000 KGF
- Hydraulic power pack with proportional valve for control of the top and side clamping pressure force
- In press driven roller, synchronised with the production line
- Bearer insertion with automatic centering device, designed to accommodate varying bearer widths
- Six slot bearer magazine, to store various cross-sections and lengths, selectable by the line
- Category 3 safety system for the bearer magazine, enabling safe bearer magazine reloads without stopping the line
- Bearer pusher, and dunnage magazine movements are controlled with a servo motor
- FROMM HAJ13 super jumbo strap dispenser, supporting efficient continuous production
- Easy remote feed custom strap feed chute
This tailored solution ensures high performance, minimal manual intervention and consistent pack quality across every strapping cycle.

Installation and commissioning
This project required two weeks onsite installation followed by one week of commissioning, training and handover. FROMM's installation team worked closely with the customer's teams to integrate the press, strapping equipment and safety systems into the wider production line. Training ensured operators and maintenance personnel were fully confident in the new automated workflow.
Project Outcomes
The customer now benefits from;
- Faster and more consistent strapping cycles
- Integrated automation into their new high capacity production line
- Reduced manual labour and increased throughput
This installation demonstrates FROMM's ability to engineer tailored automation solutions that deliver reliability, safety and operational efficiency for the timber manufacturing and processing industry.
