The Role of R&D in Driving Innovation in Packaging Solutions

24 Jul 2025

In today's logistics and manufacturing industries, innovation isn’t a luxury, it’s essential. Nowhere is this more evident than in the packaging sector, where evolving customer needs, an increasing demand for more sustainable options, and the drive for operational efficiency all converge. At the heart of these advancements is Research and Development (R&D). For FROMM Packaging, R&D isn’t just a department—it’s a cornerstone of our mission to deliver smarter, stronger, and more sustainable packaging solutions.

Why R&D is crucial to packaging innovation

R&D plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of packaging. It allows companies to explore new materials, rethink packaging system design, and develop machinery that responds to both current and future market needs.

For FROMM, R&D is also a response to evolving customer demands and stricter industry standards. Customers are increasingly seeking packaging solutions that offer better load stability, improved recyclability, and compatibility with automation - all while reducing costs. Thanks to a research driven approach, FROMM stays ahead of these expectations, delivering proven and progressive solutions that truly perform in the real world.

Key areas where R&D impacts packaging technology

Material Innovation

A critical area of R&D is in the development of new and improved packaging materials. At FROMM, research focuses on creating films and strapping products that are not only stronger and lighter, but also more sustainable. This includes developing materials that reduce waste, improve recyclability, and use fewer resources without compromising performance - the hallmark of our innovation in packaging materials.

Machinery Development

R&D is instrumental in the creation of advanced packaging machinery. FROMM invests heavily in developing smarter, safer, and more energy efficient equipment, tailored to today’s complex production environments. For example, FROMM’s patented strapping head technology and automation solutions demonstrate how continuous research leads to real world operational gains including less downtime, reduced maintenance, and better packaging outcomes.

Sustainability

Packaging R&D is closely linked with sustainability. FROMM’s commitment to sustainability means researching ways to reduce our environmental impact while improving product performance. This includes initiatives to optimise material use, improve recyclability, and reduce carbon emissions. Our FROMM sustainability strategy is directly informed by the insights gained from our research and development teams around the globe.

Automation Compatibility

As industries adopt smarter manufacturing, R&D ensures packaging solutions keep up. FROMM continuously adapts its machinery and materials to meet the requirements of automated production lines. Whether it's through high speed strapping systems or stretch wrapping machines designed for integration into packaging lines, our innovations are designed with tomorrow’s factory floor in mind.

So how does this commitment to R&D translate into real-world advancements in packaging?

Take FROMM’s robotic wrapping machines, developed to provide a mobile stretch wrapping solution that can wrap loads of irregular sizes anywhere. This technology assists our customers who may have been held back from using a pallet wrapping machine as their loads were too heavy, or oversized for a traditional turntable machine. Similarly, the P331 battery strapping tool exemplifies R&D in action—delivering a mobile, ergonomic solution for high tension applications in demanding Australian environments such as hardwood timber yards, steel and aluminium processing, and compression baling in Australia's cotton gins.

FROMM’s FA8 Series automatic inline ring wrapping machine was carefully developed to meet industry demands for an inline machine that can wrap heavy, lightweight or unstable loads at ultra high speeds. The ring wrapping system applies the film to a stationary pallet at speeds capable of up to 110 pallets per hour. With extensive options available customers can build a machine that meets the demands of their products.

FROMM tools and machines are engineered with safety in mind, minimising manual handling to reduce repetitive strain, lower workplace risks, and enhance overall operator safety. These innovative solutions are the result of extensive research into machinery or tool limitations and customer challenges. These are just a few examples of how our research driven packaging solutions solve real business problems and in turn improve safety, increase uptime, and support sustainability goals.
