Pre-stretching is a process where the film is stretched before it's applied to the load. This is different from "force to load" machines, where a film is stretched as it's applied to the pallet.

A FROMM pre-stretch carriage, combined with out high quality stretch film, offers consistent and efficient results. Our film can stretch up to 250%, turning one metre of film into 3.5 metres on your pallet. This means, you'll use less film, which reduces costs and is better for the environment.

 

Yes, scales can be added to most of our wrapping machines. This feature helps speed up the dispatch process, allowing you to wrap, weigh, and ship your goods in just minutes. The scales are integrated directly into the machine and can be installed by our service team as an optional upgrade. 

A force to load machine is designed for lower volume operations, usually under 15 pallets per day. It provides minimal film stretch by using the pallet to pull the film off the roll with a brake, resulting in lower stretch. 

FROMM has developed an innovative HYBRID film that maximises performance with this type of system.

On the other hand, a pre-stretch machine stretches the film through rollers before it's applied to the pallet. This method ensures the lowest cost per pallet while maintaining strong load integrity, making it ideal for higher volume operations.

The main difference between an automatic and a semi-automatic orbital machine would be the level of operator involvement. Battery strapping tools are designed to work with two primary strapping materials: polypropylene (PP) and polyester (PET). Polypropylene is known for its lightweight, flexible, and cost-efficient qualities, making it well-suited for standard packaging and less demanding tasks. Polyester, however, provides greater strength and resilience, making it the better choice for heavy-duty applications and securing heavier loads.

Just like any other work tool, it’s important to wear the right personal protective equipment as you handle a battery operated strapping machine. Wearing gloves will protect you hands from any cuts and abrasions you may have while handling the battery strapping tool while keeping some safety glasses on can protect your eyes from any debris that you may come into contact with. Additionally, do know that every FROMM tool comes with a safety operations manual so make sure to read its contents before you start using one.

Combination tools have a competitive advantage when it comes to general use. As a rule of thumb, they’re a great choice for simpler packaging jobs since their multiple functionalities can get work done quickly and efficiently. But for pallets that are much more complex, it would be best to go for separate tensioners and sealers since they offer more precision. 

In addition to their cost-effectiveness, manual strapping tools are highly portable. Unlike automatic strapping machines that are expensive, placed in a fixed area, and need a constant connection to a power source, a manual pallet strapping machine can be used in different locations at the cost of more physical effort. But since a manual strapping tool can put a large load on their operator, they're only ideal for smaller operations.

Just like any other work equipment, handling a manual strapping machine should be done with care. Before use, make it a habit to inspect the tool for any damage and wear protective equipment to avoid injuries from sharp edges and debris. On another note, make sure to read user manuals and to always be cautious of your fingers when handling straps.

Pneumatic strapping tools provide strong and consistent tensioning which are ideal for high-volume and demanding operations. Compared to manual tools, a pneumatic strapping machine can significantly reduce operator fatigue with its ability to utilise compressed air. Conversely, battery-powered tools may offer the convenience of portability but may not tension and seal straps as quickly. 

Both pneumatic steel and pneumatic plastic strapping are highly capable strapping solutions but the better option will ultimately depend on your needs. Businesses in the metals industry generally prefer to work with steel strapping to handle hot metals, pipes, tubes, and Hexpacks. On the other hand, PET straps can handle light to heavy applications but are much better for fixed workstations. In this case, opt for steel when handling hot, heavy, dense products and go for plastic if you’re handling a wider range of light to heavy equipment.

Pneumatic strapping machines are a great choice for businesses with moderate to high packaging needs. They excel in demanding strapping tasks since the high tension force they provide allows them to secure products that are used in construction, metalworking, and manufacturing.

Generally, pneumatic machines are best for businesses with fixed strapping stations. Since they’ll require a connection to an air compressor so its hoses and airlines may be an inconvenience if operators need to move around often. But if you need to secure heavy items like bricks, steel beams, timber and more, then getting a pneumatic strapping tool will serve as one of your best investments yet. 

A PP strap is the best option for lighter strapping operations. It’s used for small cartons, boxes, and bundles are arguably the only serious choice for these applications.
Compared to steel strapping, which is designed for heavy-duty products,  PP strapping is more affordable and can effectively handle light to moderate loads. In PET strapping’s case, PP isn’t as strong but makes up for its elasticity which is useful for handling oddly shaped pallets. In a nutshell, PP strapping  can be a great choice for those lighter operations that want a good balance of reliability and cost-effectiveness.

Polypropylene (PP) strapping is ideal for securing a wide range of packages, particularly those that are lighter or less susceptible to heavy impact. PP’s flexible but strong nature works exceptionally well for unitising smaller boxes, securing pallets, and strapping all other goods.

While PET strapping has a lower breaking strain than steel, it can handle up to 2.5 times its breaking strain in shock applications. Despite steel having a stronger tensile strength, this makes PET strapping suitable for most applications.

We can tailor a rental agreement to include servicing in the one monthly fee.

We have a wide range of spare parts available and can usually get you back up and running very quickly. FROMM provide a technical data sheet for every style of film that outlines all the technical specifications and states the amount of film on every roll, ensuring that you’ll get what you pay for every time.

It is important as stretch film is designed to be stretched. It has a “memory” which means when you stretch it the film wants to return to it’s original size. Of course when stretching it 200%+ it does not return to it’s original length but it does tighten and this is what creates the tension to hold your pallet securely. Stretching the film also reduces the amount of film on your pallet, therefore reducing the plastic waste.

All FROMM products are marked with their relevant recycling codes, so that our customers can easily sort and manage their packaging waste. In Australia, recycling and waste processing is managed differently between council areas, states and waste management providers – meaning that there are currently no universal guidelines for disposing of packaging waste in Australia. To better understand what options are available in your location, we recommend that our customers consult with their waste management provider and/or relevant governmental bodies.

All of FROMM’s products are designed according to the principles of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle – with ‘Reduce’ being our first and highest priority. ‘Reduce’ means innovating to reduce the raw material and inputs required to manufacture our products. It means innovating for efficiency, so that our tools and machines consume less energy and last longer. ‘Reduce’ also means working with our customers to find smart material-machine combinations that meet their precise needs, and then helping them to use those products correctly – cutting down on material usage, unnecessary waste, and saving costs.

While we are continually innovating to reduce the amount of plastic and unrecyclable materials in our products, at a technical level, certain products are currently very difficult to produce using recycled or part-recycled content – especially without compromising on quality and performance. While progress is being made, many innovative recyclable materials that are currently in development or are on the market are cost-prohibitive and not yet suitable for commercial scale. This is an area we are working on actively, and will continue to evolve as technology advances and more solutions become available.

The first and simplest way we can help you is by auditing your current packaging systems to understand if they are running as efficiently as they can, and are fit-for-purpose. We can then test any recommendations for containment or performance improvements at FROMM’s R&D centre and tilt testing facilities. Sustainability is the maintenance and conservation of resources for longevity.  It can be broken down into 3 factors; Environmental, Economic and Social. 

The Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) is a non for profit organisation designed to manage the development of a circular economy for packaging. FROMM is a signatory to APCO and are consistently developing sustainable packaging products that meet the targets specified by APCO.

1. 100% reusable, recyclable, or compostable packaging
2. 70% of plastic packaging being recycled or composted
3. 50% recycled content included in packaging
4. Phase out problematic and unnecessary single-use plastic packaging

APCO Targets 2025 – Stretch Film (LLDPE) Analysis

1. 100% reusable, recyclable, or compostable packaging

LLDPE stretch films are 100% recyclable under the recycling code LLDPE 4. 

2. 70% of plastic packaging being recycled or composted

Used film is highly recommend to be recycled through a plastic recycler at end of use.

3. 50% recycled content included in packaging

The highest amount of PCR content currently incorporated into stretch film manufacturing is 30% with efforts into achieving 50% underway.

4. Phase out problematic and unnecessary single-use plastic packaging

Plastic film is a necessary single-use plastic used for pallet load containment.  It therefore does not fall under this APCO target as it cannot be phased out. 

Additional materials used for pallet stability such as corners and layer pads are made from cardboard and are 100% recyclable.

Stretch films made from Linear Low-Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) are 100% recyclable under the recycling code LLDPE 4 (unless specified otherwise).

Used stretch film can be recycled through a plastic recycler that accepts used post-industrial or post-consumer LLDPE plastic.

Environmental - Stretch wrapping machines with the capability to stretch up to 300%, can reduce plastic stretch film use by up to 50% per year in comparison to hand wrapping pallets.

Economical - Reducing stretch film use, reduces costs per pallet wrapped
